Call for Applications: Sabmiller Royal Society Exchange Programme R1 2015

The Office of Research, Innovation and Development wishes to inform the University Community of the call for applications for the SABMiller Royal Society Exchange Programme R1 2015.
This programme is supported by SABMiller plc and will provide awards of 3 years’ duration aimed at supporting collaborative research projects between researchers in sub-Saharan Africa particularly Ghana and Tanzania and UK research partners.
The programme will support collaborations of single projects between the applicant (UK based scientist) and co-applicant (African based scientist) and will concentrate on the following three (3) research areas:
1. Water and Sanitation – including water engineering and irrigation, waste water management, and other related projects.
2. Agriculture (except animal or veterinary science) and Crop Science (land, soil management and crop production)
3. Renewable Energy – including solar-/wind-/hydro-energies, energy capture and storage and other related projects.

COVERAGE
The award provides a total value of £21,000 for the three (3) year period and covers:
i. travel and subsistence up to £5,000 per year for training purposes
ii. funds up to £2,000 per year for research costs

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible, both applicants (UK) & co-applicants (African) must:
• Have completed a PhD or have extensive experience at an equivalent level at the time of application. Applicant or co-applicant in final year of PhD studies can only submit apply if the PhD will have been completed before the start date of the proposed activity (including Viva). Confirmation of PhD completion will be required on acceptance if the application is successful.
• Hold a permanent or fixed term contract in an eligible university or research institute which must span the duration of the project.
• Be Citizens of a sub-Saharan African country (the African scientists).
• Have a proven track record of publishing in both national and international peer reviewed Journals.
• Hold a permanent or fixed term contract for the duration of the award in an eligible organisation in their respective countries. Ineligible organisations include industrial, private and commercial organisations, university spin-out companies.
• Be based in their respective countries/Institutions at the time of application.

HOW TO APPLY
Applications must be submitted online using the Royal Society’s electronic Grant Application and Processing (eGAP) system at https://e-gap.royalsociety.org. Applications must be initiated by the applicant (UK) on behalf of the co-applicant (African) and the respective teams.

Note: Applicants are not permitted to submit more than one application per round (deadline).
