Director of Research

Professor Joseph Kofi Teye

Professor Joseph Kofi Teye joined the Office of Research, Innovation and Development as Director, Research Innovation and Development on 1st August 2022.

Professor Teye obtained a Ph.D. (Human Geography) from the University of Leeds, UK in 2008 after completing an MPhil (Social Change) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2004. His first degree in Geography and Resource Development was awarded by the University of Ghana in 2001.

His areas of research include: Migration and Development, Migration Policy Development, Environmental Change and Migration, Natural Resources Governance, and Agricultural Policy Processes in Africa.

Prof Teye has participated (either as a PI or Co-I) in large research projects funded by international organisations, including, UKRI, DFID, ESRC, SSRC, DANIDA, EU, ACP Observatory on Migration, IOM, and ICMPD. He has consulted widely for a number of organizations and governments. He was the lead consultant for the drafting of national migration policies in Sierra Leone, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. He was also the lead consultant for the development of national labour migration policies in Ghana, Malawi and Sierra Leone. He was also the lead consultant for the drafting of an ECOWAS Action Plan for Implementing Global Compact on Refugees in the ECOWAS region.

Prof Teye is a member of various migration management technical networks and advisory boards, including the Advisory Network of Human Mobility Initiative hosted by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) of United Kingdom, and the International Advisory Board (IAB) of Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Migration and Integration. He is also a High-Level Advisor for Migration Research and Publishing for International Organisation for Migration (UN Migration Agency).

Professor Teye has held senior positions within the University of Ghana and externally, his most recent being the immediate past Director of the Centre for Migration Studies. He is also a Co-Director of the UKRI South-South Migration, Inequality and Development Hub, which is currently the world’s largest migration research project. Prof Teye is also the Director of the African Hub of the Urban Sanctuary, Migrant Solidarity, and Hospitality in Global Perspective partnership project which is funded by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSRC).
