WORLD BANK AFRICAN CENTRES OF
EXCELLENCE (ACEs)
In the year 2019, the World Bank awarded a total of US$16.5 million to three model
research centres at the University of Ghana.
The West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) and West African Centre for Cell
Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP), under the College of Basic and Applied
Sciences; and the West African Genetic Medicine Centre under the College of Health
Sciences have been classified as African Centres of Excellence under the World Bank’s
Impact Project (ACE II).
The centres are leading research, and training the next generation of African scientist.
The World Bank award is a significant boost to their outstanding record of delivery in
exploratory science and novelties.
