NOMINATION FOR THE ROYAL SOCIETY PFIZER PRIZE 2014


The Office of Research Innovations and Development wishes to announce for the information of the University Community the call for nominations for the 2014 Royal Society Pfizer Prize.

The Royal Society Pfizer Prize is targeted at early career research scientists, based in Africa, who are making innovative contribution to the biological sciences, including basic medical science, which will contribute significantly to capacity building in Africa.

Recipients are chosen by the Council of the Royal Society on recommendation of the Biological Sciences Awards Committees after which   a presentation ceremony would be held at the Royal Society. A subsequent seminar to celebrate the work of the recipient and how it will affect progress will also be held.
This award is normally   made to one individual.

COVERAGE OF SCHOLARSHIP

The prize consists of:

  • A grant of £11,000 for the cost a research project that is linked to an African Centre of Scientific Excellence, which would normally be a University, or equivalent research centre.
  •  A personal prize of £1000 is given to the recipient. Awardees own salary is not covered.

 HOW TO APPLY

Both Nominators and Nominees must complete the Nomination Forms A and B respectively and sent to email address: awards@royalsociety.org. The subject of the email must be Royal Society Pfizer Awards 2014-Form A forthe Nominatorand Royal Society Pfizer Awards 2014-Form B for the Nominee.

Application Requirements:

Nominator

A Completed Nominator form (A) submitted together with the cover sheet of the form through email by the deadline should provide the underlisted information:

  1. The nominees details
  2. The nominators details
  3. Names and contact details of two referees, one of who should a senior scientist who is an expert in the candidate’s field and must be independent of the nominator and candidate.
  4. A maximum of 100 words nomination information i.e. nominator’s relationship to candidate.
  5. A maximum of 500 words   statement outlining nominee’s scientific records and suitability for the award.
  6. A maximum of 200 words of the Nominator’s statement describing the impact made by the nominees’ research in Africa to date and how this award might enable the research to develop further the African Science Community and contribute to capacity building.

 Nominee

A Completed Nominee form (B) submitted together with the cover sheet of the form through email by the deadline should provide the under-listed information:

  1. The nominees details
  2. The nominators details
  3. The proposed project title
  4. An outline of a maximum of 200  words  of the proposed project, with indicative timings
  5. A maximum of 100 words outline of how the activities is link to African Centre for  scientific excellence
  6. A maximum of 100 words of how   the project will impact the nominee’s area of research
  7. A maximum of 100 words of what elements of the project will be cover by the grant.
  8. A maximum of 100 words of how the project will be monitored and evaluated.
  9. A maximum of 100 words of any other comments.
  10. A Curriculum Vitae of not less 4 single slides’ length which must include information on any published work.

ELIGIBILITY:

To be eligible for the Royal Society Pfizer Grant, nominee should:

  • Be an at  early  stage of research career  and have received their PhD within the last 10-15 years
  • Be currently based in Africa
  • Be linked to an African centre of scientific excellence (normally a University or an equivalent research centre).
  • Not have obtained full Professorship status

Proposed projects should be:

  • An innovative contribution to the biological sciences, including basic medical science
  • Lead to a sustainable positive impact on Africa
  • Promote capacity building in Africa
  • Be carried out in Africa
  • Adhere to ethical standards as set out in the terms and conditions
