Call for Applications: Research Proposals Addressing Covid-19 In Low- And Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) - Global Effort on Covid-19 (GECO) Health Research

The Office of Research, Innovation and Development (ORID) is pleased to inform the University community that the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) and the UK Research and Innovation  under the theme 1: “ Global Effort On Covid-19 (GECO) Health Research”, invites research proposals addressing COVID-19 in low- and middle income countries (LMICs).

Aim and Priority areas of GECO Research

GECO Health Research is focused on understanding the pandemic and how to mitigate its health impacts in contexts of LMIC using four thematic  areas: epidemiology, clinical management, infection control and health system responses.

Award Size:

Proposals should normally be up to £1 million per award. the size of grants will however vary according to the needs of each research project and a robust case for value for money.

Project duration and grant

Proposals should normally be up to 18-month duration and applicants should be ready to start the research within 4 weeks of being notified.

Eligibility:

  1. Applications from LMIC PIs, as well as PIs based in the UK working in equitable partnerships with LMIC investigators are particularly encouraged.
  2. Applicants must have a relevant academic affiliation to an eligible legally registered institution in an LMIC  or UK Higher Education Institutions and not-for-profit research institutions and in the case of the UK , Research Council institutes, and eligible Independent Research Organisations (IROs).
  3. An LMIC submitting organization must have the primary headquarters one of the LMIC countries where the research will take place.
  4. The Principal Investigator must be employed by the institution that is hosting the research.

Deadlines for Applications

GECO Health Research will  run three consecutive rounds on a rolling basis each taking place at 12 midday BST of 22nd June 2020, 10th August 2020, 28th September 2020.
