UNIVERSITY OF GHANA RESEARCH FUND (UGRF) 11th CALL FOR PROPOSALS

INTRODUCTION
The Office of Research, Innovation and Development (ORID) is pleased to announce Call for proposals with support from the University of Ghana Research Fund (UGRF). These grants are funded through the University’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) and are considered as “seed funding” to enable faculty members to leverage extramural funding i.e., additional/ larger international grants.

 

TYPES OF GRANTS
Three types of grants are available as follows:

  1. EARLY CAREER GRANTS: This is for exploratory/small proposals with budgets up to GHC 7,500. Such grants would be awarded for a period not exceeding one year and are awarded to Senior Members to enable them to explore new ideas to apply for bigger grants in the future.
  2. MID-CAREER GRANTS: These grants would normally not exceed GHC 40,000 and shall be for a period of not more than two years. Grants of this nature are awarded to Senior Members with a clear research question they want to answer.
  3. MULTI-DISCIPLINARY GRANTS: These shall not exceed GHC 120,000 and are for promoting cross-disciplinary research between at least three schools across more than one College within the University. Proposals submitted for this grant category must address a national developmental issue and should be capable of shaping or influencing policy in Ghana. Grants of this nature shall normally not be awarded for more than two years.

NB: Collaborators from institutions outside the University of Ghana must provide a letter of support from their institution.

 

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY
All lead applicants must be full-time Senior Members of the University of Ghana. The following additional eligibility requirements also apply:

  1. Applicants in the early career grant category must not be above the rank of Lecturer and should not have spent more than five years at UG.
  2. Applicants in the mid-career and multi-disciplinary grant categories should not have spent more than 10 years at UG.
  3. The following are also not eligible to apply:
    • Previous recipients of UGRF whose work is on-going;
    • Previous recipients of UGRF who have not submitted their final technical and financial reports; and
    • Previous recipients of UGRF who have not published their findings in peer-reviewed journals.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
All interested and eligible Senior Members must make an application for the grant by accessing the Online Research Grant Application System available at the following link: https://grant.ug.edu.gh

APPLICATION CONDITIONS

  • No paper applications will be accepted.
  • Applicants are required to indicate, in their application, any other grants related to their proposed research topic they currently hold.
  • Senior Members on post-retirement contract cannot be Principal Investigators but are encouraged to serve as mentors on research teams led by “younger” faculty members.

CRITERIA FOR REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS
The review will normally be based on the following criteria:

  • IMPORTANCE
  • SCIENTIFIC POTENTIAL
  • JUSTIFICATION FOR RESOURCES
  • RESEARCH TEAM

 

ETHICAL CLEARANCE
Submission of evidence of ethical approval is mandatory for all projects funded by the UGRF. Principal Investigators whose projects are selected to receive funding, will be required to show proof of ethical clearance in order for their awards to be confirmed. Ethical clearance should be obtained in the name of the Principal Investigator of the research project. Application Deadline:
The Online Research Grant Application System will be available until. Please note that applications that are started but not completed before the stated deadlines will be automatically deleted and will not be available to the applicant after the date and time indicated above.
