Call for Papers: Conference on Politics, Governance & Agency in China-Africa Engagement
The Office of Research, Innovation and Development wishes to inform the University Community of the call for papers for the China-Africa Research Initiative (CARI) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) fourth annual conference titled: "Matters of State: Politics, Governance, and Agency in China-Africa Engagement."
The conference will be held at the Johns Hopkins SAIS in Washington, DC, USA from Thursday, April 19 to Friday, April 20, 2018.
Proposals should include the following:
- a 300-word abstract of the paper,
- a brief description of the research project and methodology,
- a one-page bibliography and
- a short biography of the author.
A limited amount of travel support will be available for selected researchers to attend the conference.

The China-Africa Research Initiative (CARI) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is pleased to announce a Call for Papers for its fourth annual conference: "Matters of State: Politics, Governance, and Agency in China-Africa Engagement."
The conference will be held at Johns Hopkins SAIS in Washington, DC from Thursday, April 19 to Friday, April 20, 2018. Proposals are due by January 21, 2018. Papers are welcome on the following China-Africa governance topics, among others:
- African agency and strategic bargaining
- Civil society and non-state actors
- Corruption, anti-corruption, and neopatrimonialism
- Democratization, elections and transitions of power
- Developmental state: Government-firm relationships
- Geopolitics of cross-border cooperation
- Government capacity building via training and/or exchange programs
- Human rights (political, other)
- Party to party relations
- Peacebuilding activities (e.g. South Sudan)
- Political risk (and risk-adjusted return)
- Security/military cooperation including anti-terrorism
The list is for suggestion only; other topics are also welcome. We particularly encourage papers based on fieldwork, those that compare the Chinese approach/impact with other actors, and those that focus on specific case studies. Applicants are welcome to submit proposals using our CARI Chinese loan database and funding may be available for successful applicants using the loan database.
